Jorge Chapa
Director
Jorge Chapa is the first permanent Director of the Center on Democracy in a Multiracial Society at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also a Professor of Sociology and Latina/Latino Studies. Chapa's research has focused on alternatives to increase the successful participation of minorities in higher education and other public institutions. He is also currently doing research on immigration policy issues and voting rights.
Ruth Mathew
Program Coordinator/Business Manager

Ruth Mathew holds a B.A. in Cross Cultural Studies with a focus on International Development. Her future plans are to join the Peace Corps and pursue a Master's Degree in Intercultural Service, Leadership, and Management.
Margaret Browne Huntt
Research Specialist

Margaret Browne Huntt's research interests include issues relating to educational inequality and race and ethnicity with a focus on social stratification and mobility; equality of opportunity; and social change.
Jared Collins
Office Assistant

Jared Collins holds a B.A. in Political Science with a focus on Middle Eastern Studies. His future plans are to pursue graduate studies in Photojournalism.
Jioni Lewis

Jioni Lewis is a second year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program. Jioni has been working on research which examines the association between color-blind racial ideology and social justice attitudes as well as factors that influence the development of a critical awareness of racism among diverse college students. Her research interests also include: examining the psychological effects of racism for people of color, racial identity development, and exploring identity development among women of color.
Teresa Ramos

Teresa Ramos is a doctoral student from Chicago in cultural anthropology with focuses in the anthropology of education, racism, and youth activism. More specifically she is committed to a long-term investigation of public education in Illinois and schools as spaces of learning about race and racism.
Maurice Samuels

Maurice Samuels is a doctoral candidate in the Educational Psychology Department's Studies in Interpretive, Statistical Measurement, and Evaluative Methodologies for Education (QUERIES) Division at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. His interests are in school accountability systems at the school base level and studying the theory and practice of alternative approaches to evaluation, including democratic and culturally responsive evaluation.
Roy Linzy-Turner
Student Assistant

Roy Linzy-Turner is a junior in Sociology. After finishing his Bachelor's Degree, his plans are to work at the Chicago Fire Department then pursue graduate studies. Roy enjoys volunteering as well.
Uriel Montoya
Student Assistant

Uriel Montoya is a Junior majoring in Latina/o Studies with a minor in African American Studies. He plans to attend graduate school to obtain a Masters in Secondary Education, my goal is to become a high school teacher first then work with policy at a state or district level.
